Ramboll, a global leader in engineering, architecture and sustainability since 1945, was commissioned in 2021 to complete a life cycle assessment (LCA) of the Safety-Kleen re-refined base oil, KLEEN+. Ramboll’s assessment was performed in accordance with ISO 14040, 14044 and 14067 standards to provide consistency, transparency and comparability. The LCA documented significant avoided greenhouse gas emissions in the production of KLEEN+ re-refined base oil compared to base oil refined from virgin crude oil.

• In 2021 the production of KLEEN+ base oils saved 1.5 million metric tons of CO2e emissions compared to non-re-refined base oil.

• Every gallon of KLEEN+ reduces emissions by 10.06 kg CO2e (2.7 kg CO2e/liter) – a 78% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to non-re-refined base oil.

• KLEEN+ base oils generate 2.78 kg CO2e/gallon (0.7 kg CO2e/liter) compared to non-re-refined base oil which generate 12.84 kg CO2e/gallon (3.4 kg CO2e/liter).

• Key reasons for the lower carbon footprint of KLEEN+ are lack of disposal via combustion (waste management) and lower total energy needed to process used motor oil into re-refined base oil compared to the energy required to process crude oil into base oil.
